CMS Elementary Music PLC

VISION

The purpose of the CMS ELEMENTARY MUSIC PLC is to dedicate a time and place where teachers can thoughtfully collaborate and examine best music teaching practices to positively impact learning for all students. The vision of the PLC is to also provide a place where music teachers can reflect upon their teaching and as a community SHARE helpful information and resources. The PLC also supports teachers by keeping a current wiki site that houses lesson plan ideas and tips that are submitted by it's members.

WHAT WE DO

The CMS ELEMENTARY MUSIC PLC is a dynamic forum in which both state and national trends in music teaching are discussed. Guest speakers and presenters teach us new ways to enhance teaching elementary music education. Professional development opportunities in music are also shared.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

Created in 2012 by Monica Adams of J.V.Washam Elementary and Blythe Elementary School, the PLC is now entering it's THIRD year!

Julie Royer is the co-director of the PLC from Paw Creek Elementary School. The two met at the state music conference and later teamed up to start the CMS ELEMENTARY MUSIC PLC. Monica states; "Classroom teachers meet on a daily basis to plan. Music teachers are not afforded this opportunity. In many cases we plan on our own and do not know who the other music teachers are in our own district! Music is an important part of our Common Core Curriculum and we must have a dedicated forum to share information and reflect upon our teaching practice. Our desire is to connect with the classroom teachers so that we can thoughtfully integrate music across the curriculum to enhance and support learning. Together we can create a brighter teaching experience for ourselves and cultivate a rich repertoire of lessons to enhance music learning for all students. The PLC is also a forum where we can learn to advocate for the ARTS! The ARTS are not supported as vigorously as technology and literacy. In fact, the ARTS are sadly overlooked and neglected. We owe it to our children to advocate for the ARTS because we know that they will enrich their lives in ways that other disciplines cannot."

Monica and Julie are both active members of NAFME/MENC/NCMEA and have combined "decades" of teaching experience in Music and the General Classroom. Monica has taught in New York, New Jersey, Florida, Texas, North Carolina and Julie has taught in Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, Florida, Texas and North Carolina. Monica has been voted "President Elect" for the NCMEA District #6 for the 2014-2016 term. Monica states "We will benefit by being connected to a pipeline of information regarding Music Education at the state level!"

With Julie relocating to Ohio and Monica to Texas, the PLC is now meeting at Selwyn Elementary, hosted by Jennifer Pasour and Heidi Schoffstall. Heidi has been meeting with the PLC since she moved to Charlotte in summer 2013. Heidi and Jen met when they aught together at Idlewild Elementary, when Jen was still traveling between there and Selwyn. After moving into the full-time position at Selwyn, she offered up her school as the meeting location.
